Demarco slowed their speed to avoid unwanted attention and kept a careful eye on his prisoner. He wouldn't put it past the man to jump out of a moving vehicle traveling at eighty miles an hour. He'd kept pace with traffic for the last hundred miles or so. The cops were probably already out looking for a stolen vehicle, and who knows what Charlie told the police once help arrived.

His gut twisted.

It couldn't be helped.

He had to choose Allwood over her.

It was always going to be that way.

To bring Charlie into his world and share what he'd seen and suffered because of this man came with risks. She'd been sympathetic, kind, and loving. When he'd climbed into the machine all those years ago, he hadn't expected to have the love of a woman in his life. He'd chosen his path. A lonely one. A path he'd intended only for himself. Then he'd met her.

The temptation had been strong to end his quest and forget about everything: his family, the horrible experiments, the loss of his sister. One part of him longed for it—to have a wife, children, a regular life. The dream reminded him so much of home on the farm his heart ached for it. A time when everything had been simpler. But then he knew he’d never completely forget, and his obsession would always haunt him.

After he eradicated Allwood and his experiments and everything was known, Charlie would loathe him. If she didn't already after the way he'd abandoned her at the accident scene. She must know he was responsible. Perhaps he'd shut the door on his dream the minute he chose to ram the SUV.

"Where are we going?" For tens of miles Allwood had remained silent, but now he'd finally opened up.

The sound of his voice grated on Demarco. If only the man knew the level of hatred inside, he'd stop drawing attention to himself.

Demarco snorted a breath through his nose. The 'professor' didn't deserve an answer.

"My arm, it's broken." The older man held it awkwardly in his lap. "Are you going to do something about it?"

"Shut up." Demarco spied a police car parked under an overpass and slowed the car. "When we drive up to the gates, you're going to act as if everything is normal. I'm your security. That's what you'll tell them."

"They won't let you on base without a badge."

"It's your job to make sure they do."

"I can't make someone break the rules."

"All you've ever done is break the rules, Allwood." Demarco pushed a thumb into the professor's leg wound.

Allwood let out a strangled cry.

"You will get me on that base." He gritted his teeth.

"You're an animal. A lunatic who should've been put down instead of caged. But your sister begged me to spare you." Allwood spat out his words. "Little did she know that decision would ruin our plans and destroy everything we'd built."

The speeding landscape around them blurred. Demarco's vision tunneled. So the only reason he'd lived, the only reason he'd been
